This glossary defines commonly used Psoriasis terms, including products and medications used in the treatment of psoriasis and other skin conditions that co-exist with psoriasis such as acne, rosacea, eczema and dermatitis.

Macules: patch of skin that is altered in color but usually not elevated and that is a characteristic symptom of various skin diseases

Massage: Holistic psoriasis treatment using therapeutic practice of manipulating the muscles and limbs to ease tension and reduce pain. Soybe Massage increases circulation and lymphatic drainage, reduces muscular spasms and breaks down adhesions.

Mast cell: a tissue cell that is a primary participant in immediate hypersensitivity reactions. Mast cells make and release histamine and other mediators of inflammation.

Maxiflor®: (Diflorasone) topical high to very high potency corticosteroid, used in the treatment of a variety of skin conditions. Also sold under the brand name(s): Florone®; Florone E®; Psorcon™

Meadow-grass dermatitis: phototoxic dermatitis marked by an eruption of vesicles and bullae arranged in streaks and bizarre configurations, caused by exposure to sunlight after contact with meadow grass.

Measles: symptoms include fever, coughing and a spreading skin rash.

Medical history: a collection of information obtained from the patient and from other sources concerning the patient's past and current health.

Medicamentosa: drug eruption

Meditation: A typically self-directed practice for relaxing the body and calming the mind.May be useful in the self-treatment of the symptoms of psoriasis.

Melanoma : The rarest of the skin cancers (4-5% of all skin cancers), melanoma is also the most dangerous. It spreads rapidly, attacking the cells that produce pigment, or skin coloring. The color of melanoma skin lesions varies: symptoms include patches of skin with irregular borders that change in shape and size, and sometimes bleed. Watch for changes to existing moles.

Mesotherapy: the practice of using microinjections of conventional or homeopathic medication and/or vitamins into the mesoderm or middle layer of skin to deliver healing or corrective treatment to a specific area of the body.

Methotrexate: a medication prescribed in the treatment of moderate to severe symptoms of psoriasis.

Milia: a small pearly firm non-inflammatory whitehead. Milia are due to retention of keratin in an oil gland duct blocked by a thin layer of epithelium.

Minocin® (Oral): Oral antibiotic used to treat symptoms of infections caused by bacteria. Belongs to a class of drugs called tetracycline antibiotics. Also sold under the brand name(s): Minocycline, Dynacin®

Minocycline: Oral antibiotic used in the treatment of infections that are caused by bacteria. Belongs to a class of drugs called tetracycline antibiotics. Also sold under the brand name(s): Minocin® (Oral), Dynacin®

Mometasone furoate: a cortisone-like steroid available in cream, ointment, and lotion form. It is used in the treatment of certain itchy rashes and other inflammatory skin conditions. Also sold under the brand name(s): Elocon®

Monodox®: an oral antibiotic which is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It is often prescribed for the treatemnt of rosacea. Also sold under the brand name(s): Vibra-Tabs®, Vibramycin®, Doxycycline®, Doryx®, Novodoxylin®
