This glossary defines commonly used Psoriasis terms, including products and medications used in the treatment of psoriasis and other skin conditions that co-exist with psoriasis such as acne, rosacea, eczema and dermatitis.

Warts: low-level viral infections cause warts. Warts are smooth skin lesions which may be lighter or darker than the surrounding skin.

Westcort®: (Westwood Squibb), Hydrocortisone, a low- potency steroid used in the treatment of the symptoms of skin conditions. Also sold under the brand name(s): Cetacort®, Nutracort®, Anusol-HC®, Hytone®, Cort-Dome®, Cortenema®, Cortifoam®, Cortaind®, Lanacort®, Locoid®.

Willow Extract: a Beta Hydroxy Acid used for exfoliation and the treatment of acne.

Wintergreen Leaves: a Beta Hydroxy Acid. A naturally occurring salicylic acid. Its effect on the skin is similar to those of Retin-A, but with less irritation. It is soluble in oil and can exfoliate oily skin areas, even within oil-rich pores. It has a beneficial effect on the symptoms of acne, pigmentary disturbances, and sun damaged skin.

Winter itch: a dehydrated condition of the skin characterized by redness, dry scaling, fine cracking, and pruritus, which occurs chiefly during the winter when low humidity in heated rooms can cause excessive water loss from the stratum corneum. Called also asteatosis, asteatotic eczema, eczema craquele é, pruritus hiemalis, and xerosis cutis.

Whitehead: Whiteheads are small white spots (about the size of pinheads) which are caused by collections of oil and skin in pores.
